Japanese Garden Design
Marc P. Keane
The Japanese garden designer, like the poet, creates a theater for the wind to speak...

Review: A landscape architect and garden designer working in Japan, Keane here offers a history of the Japanese garden over 20 centuries, showing how society, politics, religion, art, and the tea ceremony have contributed to the structure and elements of these beautiful retreats. He also includes chapters on design principles and techniques, explaining, for instance, how individual aspects such as rock, sand, plants, and bridges embody the symbolism of the gardens. This comprehensive book includes not only excellent full-color photography but detailed plans of the various types of gardens. An extensive glossary, a bibliography of books in English and Japanese, and numerous maps are also offered. The text concludes with a timetable mapping the evolution of the garden alongside events in Japanese culture and world history. Recommended for public and academic libraries.

Water Features for Small Gardens
Francesca Greenoak
A wealth of imaginative ideas for small water gardens from simple splash fountains to intricate canals, rills and steps.

Review:
Capturing in a garden context water's elusive reflective and invigorating properties, Greenoak (Glorious Gardens) offers ideas to rouse the thirst of the most soil-bound of gardeners. Extensively illustrated with color photos, six chapters spotlight distinctive types of water gardens from the simplicity of a subtle bowl to a landscape-dominating canal. The book opens a mini-encyclopedia of well-designed backyard and entry-way possibilities: a whimsical sculpture of a swimmer spouts water from one wine barrel into another; a dripping fountain heightens the intricate geologic patterns in a bed of stones; a naturalistic pond attracts wildlife. Informative photo captions alert the reader's eye to design elements as well as identify plants. Four-color drawings illustrate steps of construction and maintenance (pond filling, pump cleaning, plant pruning and hygiene) of elementary ponds and pools. Profiles of common species of aquatic and waterside plants useful in the U. S. are also provided. Garden Book Club selection. (July)

Simply the best book I have read for novices like me who have admired the tranquillity and peace of oriental gardens but were unable to capture the techniques required to plan such a simple yet complex space. Waterfalls, Fountains, Pools & Streams: Designing & Building Water Features for Your Garden
Helen Nash, Eamonn Hughes
Even a plain garden becomes a paradise when it's filled with the sounds and beauty of rushing water!

From Booklist

Nash and Hughes provide detailed instructions on how to construct waterfalls, fountains, pools, and streams of various sizes, some of which require a large lot and others only a very small space. There is information on basic installation, pump selection, plumbing, fountain accessories and maintenance, and all materials and tools required. An appendix lists 37 plants suitable for stream gardens, giving their growth habits, flowering times, and hardiness. Some of the larger projects would be rather difficult for average gardeners, and the authors suggest that it would be feasible for them to hire a qualified contractor or landscape architect.
